Christy Smith forever holds a special spot
in Survivor lore as the franchise's
first hearing-impaired castaway. She arrived with
a certain fanfare
in the Amazon, and from
our point of view acquitted herself
admirably by finishing in sixth place.
Truly an excellent and remarkable result for
the contestant who was initially considered
to be the series' furthest long shot.
Interestingly, as stronger tribemembers were bounced
week after week, Christy's presence grew.
We became accustomed to seeing and hearing
her in our living rooms, and by the end we
were scarcely aware anymore of her so-called
disability.
Most of us will never live the quiet life of
desperation that Christy knows so well.
But for a few months at least, we caught a
fleeting glimpse through her eyes, and are
surely the better for it.
