After 39 days
in Panama and too many shifting alliances to
count, Washington state's Sandra Diaz-Twine
emerged as the 'Sole Survivor' of Survivor 7 Pearl Islands.
With a near-unanimous vote over scoutmaster
Lillian Morris, Sandra took home both
bragging rights and a check for $1 million ~
well okay, it's $530k after taxes but still
a right hefty prize fund.
Show host Jeff Probst may have said it best when he
described Sandra as "the lippiest mother
Survivor has ever had". Lippy is
right ~ also sassy, assertive, hard-nosed,
and at times a tad vindictive.
Interestingly enough, the bi-lingual castaway stood out
from the start, bartering in Spanish with
Panamanian villagers as the Tribes first
went ashore. From there, confident and
self-assured, Sandra never looked back.
Not an episode went by that viewers weren't
left with her thick accent ringing in their
ears. More than once her days on the
island appeared numbered, and yet by
going with the flow she kept hanging
around to fight another day ~ which is quite
instructive in-and-of-itself when you think
about it.
Ultimately, a near-unanimous Jury vote made Sandra the
first Puerto Rican, and fourth female, to
take home Mark Burnett's 7-figure check.
Not a bad month's work to be sure ~ made all
the more impressive by the fact that few if
anyone figured she'd even reach the merge.
All told, Sandra's victory was a worthy
conclusion to S7's litany of plot twists &
turns.
